CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A rocket that’s the last of its variety shipped the latest, most effective GPS satellite to orbit for the Air Force on Thursday.

United Start Alliance’s Delta IV medium-class rocket blasted into a hazy early morning sky from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. It was a fitting swan music for the rocket. Firm President Tory Bruno tweeted that the liftoff was “scorching, straight and usual.”

Two hours later on, the satellite divided from the higher stage and the organization declared results.

The Delta IV Medium finished its 17-12 months run with 29 launches. Denver-based United Start Alliance said it will be changed by the still-in-progress Vulcan rocket. The Delta IV Significant, meanwhile, will keep on to soar.

The freshly released GPS satellite is the second in a sequence of subsequent-technology navigation spacecraft. It is nicknamed Magellan following the 16th-century Portuguese explorer. Lockheed Martin, also centered in Colorado, designed the satellite.
