ANU Cosmologist Dr Brad Tucker says while most space projects are now essentially in “hibernation status,” the United States Space Force went ahead and launched their first mission into space on Friday morning.

The satellite will provide “high band width communications for the defense” and new technology which prevents “jamming” caused by interference from other satellites, Dr Tucker said.

He added this satellite launch was an exception to the general rule and “most of the planned rocket launches from NASA to SpaceX are on indefinite hold until they can resume” after the coronavirus pandemic has passed.

“Entire NASA centres have sent everyone to work from home”.

According to Mr Tucker, some essential services, such as the international space station will continue to function, but much of the “development work” is on hold.
