The San Francisco 49ers will gauge where Jimmy Garoppolo is today and whether or not the quarterback can practice this afternoon. His status for Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles remains up in the air.

Even Nick Mullens isn’t sure which quarterback will be out there when the 49ers offense takes the field. He started during this past weekend’s 36-9 win over the New York Giants to cap off a two-game road trip featuring back-to-back games at MetLife Stadium.

Mullens finished the game 25-of-36 for 343 yards with a touchdown and a passer rating of 108.9. He joined KNBR this morning and was asked if he will start against the Eagles.

“I’m not sure,” Mullens responded on the Murph & Mac show. “But you just take it one day at a time and prepare like you’re always the starter. That’s a good question.”

This past weekend’s game was Mullens’ ninth straight start with 220-or-more passing yards, a mark that ties 49ers legend Joe Montana, who accomplished the same thing in the 80s.

“You’re pretty humbled and thankful for what that says,” Mullens said. “Obviously, Joe Montana has the resume and the legacy that he has established. But for me to even have a way to relate to him is pretty cool. It means a lot to me, and it’s pretty cool.”

Mullens was also asked about his NFL future, and if he thinks he might start next season either for the 49ers or another team. The quarterback is scheduled to become a restricted free agent after this season.

“That’s a good question,” Mullen responded. “The thing that I would say is there’s a lot that can happen between now and Week 17. So much happens in the NFL. … But I will say over four years, I have grown super faithful, you could say, to the red and gold and San Francisco.”

49ers good-guy Nick Mullens discusses touchdown ritual involving pylon

For the second game in a row, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens followed up a touchdown by helping out the game crew and fixing the fallen pylon on the corner of the end zone.

What a nice guy.

Mullens did so during Week 2 against the New York Jets. This time, his teammates weren’t going to let their quarterback leave the pylon in disarray during their second consecutive game at MetLife Stadium — this time against the New York Giants.

This moment came after a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Jerick McKinnon in the second quarter. The 49ers went on to win the game 36-9.

A new TD routine

It will be Nick Mullens at quarterback on the MetLife Stadium field when the San Francisco 49ers face the New York Giants on Sunday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan made the announcement on Friday morning during an interview on KNBR.

“I don’t think we’ve ruled [Garoppolo] out, but I can on you guys’ radio show, I guess,” Shanahan said. “Jimmy’s not going to be playing, so Nick’s going to be good to go. He’s got all the reps this week, and he’s fired up.”

Starter Jimmy Garoppolo has not practiced this week and isn’t expected to do so on Friday as he continues to recover from a high-ankle sprain suffered this past weekend against the New York Jets.

Shanahan said the offense wouldn’t change for Mullens. It will just be a different guy running his

49ers QB Nick Mullens shines in win over Giants, his first start since 2018

By Kirk Larrabee

Even though Nick Mullens played well enough during his 2018 stint as the 49ers starting quarterback to prove he undoubtedly had a promising NFL future, there was still some uncertainty over how he’d play while filling in for Jimmy Garoppolo against the New York Giants on Sunday.

But, as Mullens showed during his team’s dominant 36-9 victory over the Giants, any doubts anyone may have had about his ability to step in and lead the team to a win were completely unfounded.

Mullens had a number of good moments during his time as a starter over the second half of the 2018 season while Garoppolo was sidelined with a torn ACL. He finished that season with three wins in eight games, 2,277 yards passing, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions — a performance good enough to
