    A sea of Hawaiian flags billowed by Kaahumanu Avenue Saturday morning as a handful of thousand Maui inhabitants marched in solidarity with the ongoing protest in opposition to the design of the 30 Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea. 

    The rally started with a ceremony of hula and oli, or chants, at the War Memorial baseball fields and ended with a series of speakers and a live performance at the University of Hawaii Maui Faculty. 

    Kahoʻokahi Kanuha, one particular of the front liners of the anti-TMT motion, presented a handful of terms to shut the occasion. 

    “We have the correct to identify for ourselves, our sacred destinations must be guarded due to the fact we are serious people just like any one else,” Kanuha mentioned.

    “It’s not just hundreds or thousands of folks on Mauna Kea that are from this telescope. There are 1000’s of men and women across Hawaʻii who are in opposition to it and there is hundreds of countless numbers, possibly even hundreds of thousands of men and women close to the planet who are towards this.”

    Individuals who aid the TMT say the telescope would support the neighborhood economic system and astronomical exploration.

    TMT associates have declared that they are seeking the required permits to construct the telescope at their prepare B website in the Canary Islands, but preserve that Mauna Kea is their most well-liked area. 

    The two sides say there will be no compromise.
